How it works
Best for: a diesel with a rough idle, hesitation under load, a persistent EGR fault code, or visible smoke on acceleration.
The EGR valve routes a measured amount of exhaust gas back into the inlet to bring combustion temperatures down. On a diesel doing short, cold journeys that gas carries soot, and over enough miles the valve and the inlet tract silt up with it. A valve that then sticks open gives you a rough idle and no throttle response; one that sticks shut gives you a fault code and, on many engines, a filter that starts blocking too.
We take the valve off, clean it properly rather than spraying something through the inlet, and test that it moves through its full range under command. On engines where the cooler has gone the same way, that gets checked at the same time — there is no sense cleaning one and leaving the other packed.
Where the valve is worn rather than dirty, cleaning will not hold and we will say so and price the replacement. Solenoid and position-sensor faults are their own thing and are diagnosed as part of the job.
What we will not do is blank it off or map it out on a road car. It is an emissions defeat device, it is an MOT failure, and it typically makes the DPF situation worse rather than better — more soot reaches the filter, not less.
Which cars? Diesels in particular, though plenty of modern petrols have EGR too. Send the registration and the fault codes and we will tell you what we expect to find.
Warranty: 12 months on the work. Parts carry their manufacturer's own cover.
What customers say
Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. He did an amazing job and I'll be recommending him to friends and family for any work that they need doing. 5 stars!
Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.
Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.
Workshop re-mapping
Send us the registration and we confirm what can safely be gained on your exact engine, and what it costs, before you book.
The car is checked over before a single line is written. If something needs attention first we tell you, rather than mapping over it.
The factory file is read off and archived before the new one goes on, so the car can be put back to standard at any point.
We drive it, then you drive it. If it is not what you wanted, the original goes straight back on.
Works well with
Each of these covers something the others cannot. Fitted in the same visit they cost less than booking them separately — ask and we will price the combination.
Re-Mapping
A blocked diesel particulate filter cleaned on the car and the reason it blocked found — rather than the filter taken off and the light coded out.
Re-Mapping
The engine light read properly — what the code actually means on your engine, what is causing it, and what it costs to put right.
Questions
It would be cheaper on the day and expensive afterwards. On a road car it is an emissions defeat device: an MOT failure, a problem with your insurer, and on most modern engines it puts more soot through the DPF rather than less. We do not offer it for road use. For a genuine competition or off-highway vehicle, ask and we will be straight with you about what is and is not possible.
You often do not, which is why the diagnostic comes first. A rough idle and a flat throttle can equally be an injector, a turbo actuator or a boost leak, and we would rather spend an hour finding out than sell you a clean that changes nothing.
Yes. A re-map is a modification, and not declaring it gives an insurer grounds to refuse a claim. Most note it for a modest premium change, and we will put the details in writing for you to forward.
No — not on a vehicle that uses the road. Removing or defeating any of them is illegal under the Construction and Use regulations, it is an MOT failure and it gives your insurer grounds to refuse a claim. What we do instead is fix them: DPF cleaning and diagnosis, EGR cleaning and repair, and AdBlue system repair are all on this page, and on most cars the proper repair costs less than the delete anyway.
With the DTC fault code diagnostic on this page. It is £60, credited against the repair if we do the work, and it tells you what the code actually means on your engine rather than which part to throw at it. Nothing else here is worth booking until you know what the car is complaining about.
