What your advisories actually mean
A pass with advisories is a list of what will fail next year, written in the shortest possible phrases. These are the ones that come up most, and what each is telling you.
“Brake pad wearing thin”
There is life left, but not a year's worth. Expect to need pads before the next test.
“Tyre worn close to the legal limit”
1.6mm is the legal minimum and grip falls away well before it. This is the advisory to act on soonest.
“Slight play in a suspension component”
A bush or joint starting to go. Not dangerous yet, but it will fail next year and it affects how the car drives now.
“Oil leak, no drips forming”
A seep rather than a leak. Worth finding the source before it becomes the kind that leaves marks on the drive.
“Corrosion, not excessive”
Rust that is present but not yet structural. On an older car this is the one to keep an eye on year to year.
“Headlamp aim marginal”
Cheap to correct and worth doing — it is both a failure next time and the reason you cannot see properly now.

Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.
Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.

How much is an MOT?
£85, collected from your home or work, tested and brought back — for a class 4 vehicle, cars and small vans.
How early can I have it done?
Up to a month minus a day before it expires, and the new certificate still runs from the old expiry date — so booking early costs you nothing in remaining time.
What happens if it fails?
You get the refusal notice and a price for the work needed. There is no obligation to have it done here, and if you do the retest is free within ten working days.
Is an MOT the same as a service?
No. An MOT is a legal test of whether the car met minimum standards on the day. A service replaces what wears out so it does not fail in the first place. You need both, and doing them in one visit is the cheapest way.
What is an advisory, and does it matter?
An advisory is something that is not a failure yet but is heading that way. It is the most useful part of the whole test and the part nobody reads, because it comes off the printer as a set of terse phrases. We go through yours and tell you what will fail next year.
Can I drive the car if it fails?
Only in narrow circumstances — to a pre-booked test or to a garage for repair — and never with a dangerous defect. If the failure is dangerous, the car should not be driven at all, and we will tell you plainly if that is the case.
