How it works

What you actually get

Best for: an engine management light, a car in limp mode, an intermittent fault, or a code somebody has already cleared once and watched come back.

A fault code tells you which circuit the car is unhappy about. It does not tell you which part has failed, and the difference between those two things is most of the money people waste on cars. P0299 is not 'fit a turbo'. It is 'the car did not see the boost it asked for', and the cause might be a split hose, a sticking actuator, a blocked filter or the turbo.

So we read every module rather than just the engine, pull the freeze-frame data that shows what the car was doing at the moment the code set, and then test the circuit itself. Live data while the fault is happening is worth more than any number of code reads afterwards.

You get the finding in writing: what the code means on your engine, what we found, what it costs to fix, and what happens if you leave it. If it is safe to leave, we will say so.

Codes are cleared at the end, once the fault behind them is fixed. Clearing a code on a car that still has the fault just resets the clock until the light comes back — and on emissions codes in particular, it is what people mean when they talk about coding a warning out. We do not do that.

Which cars? Any car, van or light commercial, whoever serviced it last. Bring the code if you already have one and we will tell you on the phone whether it is a five-minute answer.

Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. He did an amazing job and I'll be recommending him to friends and family for any work that they need doing. 5 stars!

Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.

Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.

1

Confirm what is possible

Send us the registration and we confirm what can safely be gained on your exact engine, and what it costs, before you book.

2

Health check first

The car is checked over before a single line is written. If something needs attention first we tell you, rather than mapping over it.

3

Your original map is saved

The factory file is read off and archived before the new one goes on, so the car can be put back to standard at any point.

4

Road tested with you

We drive it, then you drive it. If it is not what you wanted, the original goes straight back on.

Questions

About the DTC Fault Code Diagnostics

Can you just clear the code so it passes the MOT?

No. An engine management light on at the time of the test is an MOT failure in its own right, and clearing the code without fixing the fault means it comes back — often on the drive home, and always before the retest. Worse, on an emissions fault it is coding out a warning the car is right to be giving you. We will find out why the light is on and tell you what it costs.

Why £60 when the accessory shops read codes for nothing?

Because they are reading a code and we are diagnosing a fault. A free read gives you a number off the generic engine module; this is every module at manufacturer level, freeze-frame data, live testing and a written finding with a price. And the £60 comes off the repair if you have us do the work.

The light has gone out on its own. Do I still need to bother?

Probably, yes. An intermittent fault stores a code even after the light goes out, and the history is often the most useful thing on the car — it tells us how many times it has happened and what the engine was doing each time. Intermittents get much harder to find once that history is cleared.

Do I have to tell my insurer about a re-map?

Yes. A re-map is a modification, and not declaring it gives an insurer grounds to refuse a claim. Most note it for a modest premium change, and we will put the details in writing for you to forward.

Do you remove DPFs, EGRs or AdBlue systems?

No — not on a vehicle that uses the road. Removing or defeating any of them is illegal under the Construction and Use regulations, it is an MOT failure and it gives your insurer grounds to refuse a claim. What we do instead is fix them: DPF cleaning and diagnosis, EGR cleaning and repair, and AdBlue system repair are all on this page, and on most cars the proper repair costs less than the delete anyway.

My engine light is on. Where do I start?

With the DTC fault code diagnostic on this page. It is £60, credited against the repair if we do the work, and it tells you what the code actually means on your engine rather than which part to throw at it. Nothing else here is worth booking until you know what the car is complaining about.
