How it works

What you actually get

Best for: any diesel from about 2015 showing an AdBlue warning, a restricted-start countdown, or an SCR fault code.

AdBlue faults frighten people because of how the warning is worded. The car tells you it will not restart in so many hundred miles, the main dealer quotes four figures for a tank assembly, and it feels like the only options are a huge bill or a delete. Usually it is neither.

The common failures are specific and repairable: a quality sensor that has drifted, a dosing injector crystallised shut, a tank heater that has failed so the fluid freezes in winter, a pump that has lost pressure, or a NOx sensor at one end of the system reading out of range. Each of those is a different part at a different price, and telling them apart is the whole job.

So we diagnose before we quote. Live data off the SCR system, pressure tested, sensors checked against what the exhaust is actually doing — then a figure for the repair that is actually needed. A crystallised injector can often be cleaned and put back.

What we do not do is delete it. Removing or defeating an SCR system on a road vehicle is illegal, it is an MOT failure, and it is the one piece of emissions equipment the DVSA has been most active about. If yours is faulty, we will fix it.

Which cars? Euro 6 diesels — cars, vans and light commercials. Send the registration and the exact warning text and we can usually narrow it down before you bring it in.

Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. He did an amazing job and I'll be recommending him to friends and family for any work that they need doing. 5 stars!

Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.

Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.

Questions

About the AdBlue System Diagnosis & Repair

Can you not just delete the AdBlue system? I have been quoted for it.

Not on a road vehicle, no. An SCR delete or emulator is illegal under the Construction and Use regulations, it fails the MOT, it invalidates your insurance, and it is the emissions defeat the DVSA has pursued hardest. Plenty of people will quote you for it. We will not, and on most of the cars we see the genuine repair costs less than the delete does anyway.

The dealer quoted £1,800 for a new tank. Is that right?

Sometimes, and often not. A complete tank assembly is genuinely expensive, but it is also the part a dealer replaces when the diagnosis stops at 'AdBlue fault'. A drifted quality sensor or a crystallised injector presents almost identically and costs a small fraction of it. Get it diagnosed properly before you agree to a tank.

It says the car will not restart in 300 miles. How urgent is that?

Urgent enough to book it now rather than next month, but not urgent enough to panic. The countdown is real — once it reaches zero the engine will not restart — but it counts down in hundreds of miles, and the fault behind it is usually a day's work. Ring us with the figure on the dash and we will tell you how much room you have.

Do I have to tell my insurer about a re-map?

Yes. A re-map is a modification, and not declaring it gives an insurer grounds to refuse a claim. Most note it for a modest premium change, and we will put the details in writing for you to forward.

Do you remove DPFs, EGRs or AdBlue systems?

No — not on a vehicle that uses the road. Removing or defeating any of them is illegal under the Construction and Use regulations, it is an MOT failure and it gives your insurer grounds to refuse a claim. What we do instead is fix them: DPF cleaning and diagnosis, EGR cleaning and repair, and AdBlue system repair are all on this page, and on most cars the proper repair costs less than the delete anyway.

My engine light is on. Where do I start?

With the DTC fault code diagnostic on this page. It is £60, credited against the repair if we do the work, and it tells you what the code actually means on your engine rather than which part to throw at it. Nothing else here is worth booking until you know what the car is complaining about.
