How it works

What you actually get

Best for: a diesel with a DPF light on, a car stuck in limp mode, or short-journey driving that never lets the filter regenerate properly.

A DPF blocks for a reason. Usually it is short journeys that never get the exhaust hot enough to burn the soot off, but it can equally be a leaking injector, a failed EGR valve, a glow plug that has stopped working or a pressure sensor reading nonsense. Cleaning the filter without finding the cause means doing it again in three months.

So the job starts on the diagnostics. We read the soot and ash loading, check the differential pressure sensor against what the exhaust is actually doing, and look at the components that make regeneration possible before touching the filter itself.

Then the filter is cleaned on the car — a forced regeneration where the loading allows it, and a chemical clean through the sensor port where it does not. Where the ash content is genuinely beyond cleaning we will say so and price a replacement filter instead, which is the only other honest answer.

What we do not do is remove it. Taking a DPF off a road car is an offence, an automatic MOT failure, and grounds for an insurer to walk away from a claim. We will not do it and we would be wary of anyone who offers to.

Which cars? Any diesel with a particulate filter. Send us the registration and the warning lights that are on, and we will tell you what is likely before you bring it in.

Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. He did an amazing job and I'll be recommending him to friends and family for any work that they need doing. 5 stars!

Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.

Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.

1

Confirm what is possible

Send us the registration and we confirm what can safely be gained on your exact engine, and what it costs, before you book.

2

Health check first

The car is checked over before a single line is written. If something needs attention first we tell you, rather than mapping over it.

3

Your original map is saved

The factory file is read off and archived before the new one goes on, so the car can be put back to standard at any point.

4

Road tested with you

We drive it, then you drive it. If it is not what you wanted, the original goes straight back on.

Questions

About the DPF Cleaning & Diagnosis

Will you just delete it? Someone else quoted me £300.

No. DPF removal on a road car is illegal under the Construction and Use regulations, it is a straight MOT failure since the visual check came in, and it gives your insurer grounds to refuse a claim. The £300 quote is real and so is the risk — we would rather lose the job. If the car is a competition or off-highway vehicle that never uses the road, that is a different conversation and we will have it with you honestly.

Why does mine keep blocking?

Nine times out of ten it is journey length. A filter needs a sustained run at motorway speed to get hot enough to burn the soot off, and a car that only does school runs never gets there. The other times it is a mechanical fault feeding the filter more soot than it can cope with — which is exactly what the diagnostic half of this job is for.

What if it is too far gone to clean?

Then we tell you and price a replacement filter. Soot burns off; ash does not, and a filter that has done 150,000 miles can be full of ash no chemical will touch. A new or reconditioned filter is a real cost and we would rather put the number in front of you than clean something that will be back in a month.

Do I have to tell my insurer about a re-map?

Yes. A re-map is a modification, and not declaring it gives an insurer grounds to refuse a claim. Most note it for a modest premium change, and we will put the details in writing for you to forward.

Do you remove DPFs, EGRs or AdBlue systems?

No — not on a vehicle that uses the road. Removing or defeating any of them is illegal under the Construction and Use regulations, it is an MOT failure and it gives your insurer grounds to refuse a claim. What we do instead is fix them: DPF cleaning and diagnosis, EGR cleaning and repair, and AdBlue system repair are all on this page, and on most cars the proper repair costs less than the delete anyway.

My engine light is on. Where do I start?

With the DTC fault code diagnostic on this page. It is £60, credited against the repair if we do the work, and it tells you what the code actually means on your engine rather than which part to throw at it. Nothing else here is worth booking until you know what the car is complaining about.
