Demonstration

See the Pandora Microbot in use

The system working exactly as it would on your own vehicle, day to day. It covers most of what people ring up to ask before they book.

How it works

What you actually get

Best for: drivers who want the protection without a PIN — and families sharing a car, where not everyone wants to learn a sequence.

The Microbot authorises through an encrypted Bluetooth tag rather than a button sequence. Keep the tag on your keyring or in a pocket and the car behaves exactly as it always has. Without it in range the engine will not start, however genuine the key in somebody's hand looks.

The encryption is the part that matters. This is nothing like the plain, constantly broadcast signal that makes a modern car key relayable in the first place — there is no signal sitting there waiting to be amplified through your front door.

It blocks digitally over the car's CAN network rather than through relays or an added blocking module, and it does it at four separate levels: the engine, engine start, the automatic gearbox and the keyless entry system itself. There is also anti-hijack, which matters if somebody ever tries to take the car from you while it is running.

The size is the other reason we fit it. At 77 by 12 by 5 millimetres it is smaller than a stick of chewing gum, which means it goes places a conventional module simply will not — and a thief who knows what a Ghost looks like has no idea what to hunt for, or where.

The trade-off is honest enough: there is something to carry, and something to replace if it goes missing. We can pair a new tag quickly, and there is a back-up method set up with you on the day — write it down and keep it away from the car, because we do not keep a record of it.

Which cars? Best on modern keyless cars where a second tag is no hardship — and a common choice where a car is shared between several drivers. Send the registration and we will confirm your vehicle before you book.

The Microbot unit and its four blocking types: engine block, engine start block, keyless block and automatic transmission blocking.

Four ways to block, not one

Most immobilisers stop one thing. The Microbot can stop four, and they are worth separating because they defeat different attacks.

Engine block keeps the engine from running. Engine start block stops the starting sequence completing at all, so the car never turns over. Keyless block shuts down the keyless entry system itself, which is the one that matters against relay theft — your key signal can be copied and it still gets nobody anywhere. Automatic transmission blocking keeps the gearbox out of drive, so even a car left running cannot simply be driven off.

Which of the four you get depends on the vehicle, because it depends what the manufacturer exposes on the CAN network. Send us the registration and we will tell you exactly what can be blocked on yours before you book, rather than after.

How the Microbot works: the driver attempts to start the car, the CAN system requests digital authorisation, and the Microbot blocks the start digitally.

It blocks digitally, so there is nothing to find

Older immobilisers cut a wire. A relay sits in the starter circuit and physically breaks it, which works — but it is a lump of hardware somewhere in the loom, and anyone who knows the product knows roughly where to look for it.

The Microbot does not interrupt anything. It sits on the car's own data network and answers the authorisation request the car already makes every time you press start. Without the right answer the car simply does not authorise the start, exactly as if something had failed. There is no cut wire to bridge and no module to rip out.

It is also why nothing is spliced into your loom, why the car can go back to standard without a trace, and why it does not show up as an added device on a diagnostic session.

The three ways a Microbot can be authorised: a phone app, a PIN entered on the steering wheel controls, and a Bluetooth tag.

Three ways to authorise it

The Bluetooth tag in your pocket, a sequence entered on buttons the car already has, or the phone app. Most systems give you one method and that is the end of it, so having a choice is genuinely part of what you are paying for.

We fit it on the tag by default, because that is the version people actually live with — nothing to type, nothing to remember, and the car behaves exactly as it did before. Choose the PIN sequence if you would rather carry nothing extra. Tell us which you want on the day; changing your mind later is a conversation rather than a refit.

The detail

Everything else worth knowing

The things people ring up to ask before booking — how the app behaves, what the subscription actually costs you, and what paperwork you end up with.

Taking the car to a garage, a valet or an MOT

This is the first question almost everyone asks, and the answer is that it was designed for. The Ghost, Phantom and Microbot all have a service mode that suspends the disarm requirement so somebody can start and move the car without knowing your sequence. You switch it on before you drop the car off and clear it when you collect.

The Phantom's runs on a timer and expires by itself, which is the version we prefer — you cannot accidentally leave the car unprotected for a fortnight. On the Autoblok you would either leave a tag with the garage or hand over the PIN override.

Worth telling the garage it is fitted, even in service mode. A technician who knows there is an immobiliser on the car will not spend an hour chasing a non-existent starting fault.

If you forget your sequence

It happens, usually after a fortnight abroad, and the emergency back-up code handed to you at installation is what gets you moving again.

Be clear about this bit, because it matters: we do not keep a copy of your sequence or your back-up code. Nobody here can look it up for you. That is deliberate — a code we held would be a code that could be obtained from us — but it does mean the paperwork you are given on the day is the only copy that exists. Photograph it, store it with your V5 and your insurance documents, and keep it away from the car.

You can change the sequence whenever you like — after a house move, a relationship ending, or handing the car to a young driver. On the Phantom you can do it yourself from your phone. On the others, bring the car to us. If both the sequence and the back-up code are gone, ring us anyway: it becomes a job rather than a phone call, but it is recoverable.

What your insurer actually wants to know

Tell them it is fitted. Not because you have to justify it, but because some policies reduce the premium once there is an immobiliser on the car, and it is one less thing to argue about after a claim.

Be careful with the word Thatcham. Categories S5 and S7 describe tracking systems, not immobilisers, so an immobiliser being 'Thatcham approved' is usually somebody being loose with language. What the systems carry instead is TASSA verification, and we log your installation on the TASSA database in your name — that is the documentation an underwriter asks for.

Send us your insurer's wording before you book. If what they have asked for is a tracker rather than an immobiliser, we would rather tell you that now than after fitting.

Fitting day, and what the car looks like afterwards

We come to your home or workplace anywhere around Milton Keynes and the surrounding towns. Allow two to three hours. You keep the car and lose a morning rather than a day.

On the CAN-based systems nothing is cut, drilled or spliced — the unit connects to wiring already running through the car, and it can be removed later with no trace. The Autoblok is the exception: it interrupts the engine start circuit, so that one is a wiring connection, made properly and reversibly.

When the trim goes back on there is nothing to see. No LED, no keypad, no extra fob. Somebody sitting in the driver's seat would have no way of knowing. That is not a styling decision — a system a thief can spot is a system a thief can plan around.

Before we leave, you choose your sequence, we set up service mode, and we run through it until you are comfortable with it. Then we are on the end of the phone for as long as you own the car.

Had my Mercedes C180 in with Kaine to replace both front suspension springs. I knew that this was not an easy job on this car. Dropped the car off in the morning and it was ready that afternoon. He did an amazing job and I'll be recommending him to friends and family for any work that they need doing. 5 stars!

Had my Audi S3 in for a complete overhaul — Kaine supplied and fitted all the parts, including cam belt, water pump, a full service and a balance shaft delete. He also noticed one of my rear callipers was sticking, so recommended and fitted a new calliper and new rear discs and pads too. A 5 star service — I'll only use Kaine from now on for any mechanical work.

Exceptional experience with Kaine. Came out to me, took my car and fixed it all within two hours. Very impressed and will definitely call him if needed again. Great price.

Questions

About the Pandora Microbot

What if I lose the tag?

There is an emergency procedure so you are never locked out of your own car, and we can pair a replacement tag for you. We would always suggest keeping the spare somewhere safe at home rather than in the car.

How is the tag different from my car key?

Your car key broadcasts constantly, which is exactly what a relay attack exploits — the thief does not need to clone it, only to move the conversation. The Microbot tag uses encrypted Bluetooth 5.4 and does not sit there announcing itself in the same way, so there is nothing useful to relay.

Where does it actually go in the car?

That is the one thing we will not put in writing. It is 77mm long and 5mm thick, so the honest answer is almost anywhere — which is the whole point. Its hiding place is recorded for you and for us, and nowhere else.

Can more than one person have a tag?

Yes, and this is often why people choose it. Everyone who drives the car gets their own tag and nobody has to remember anything.

Will it flatten the car battery?

No. It is designed for very low standing current, well below the car's own alarm and locking. As with any modern car, if it is going to sit unused for months a trickle charger is the sensible answer.

Will it affect my warranty or damage the car?

No. It connects to the car's existing network — nothing is cut, drilled or spliced — and it can be removed later with no trace. Manufacturers and insurers expect to see exactly this kind of installation.

Do you come to me?

Yes. We fit at your home or workplace anywhere around Milton Keynes, so you keep the car and lose nothing more than a couple of hours.
